VideoConferencing Professionals LinkedIn Roundup How Video Conferencing Professionals Used LinkedIn in DecemberThe holiday season often means a slow-down in Internet chatter on LinkedIn, and the Videoconferencing Professionals group was no exception.  That being said, there were still several interesting conversations that took place within the group during the month of December.  Cari Zoch, social media manager at LifeSize Communications (@carizoch), posted a thought-provoking poll asking members what their company’s video conferencing focus would be over the course of the next year.  Mobility was the clear winner, with 23 of 50 respondents marking that as their choice, but cloud services came in second with 14 votes.  Sergio Garcia, manager at Unitronics Comunicaciones, S.A., pointed out that cloud services are going to enable mobile video conferencing adoption as it pushes through to the mainstream in 2012, linking the two most popular choices from the poll.

VideoConferencing Professionals LinkedIn Roundup How Video Conferencing Professionals Used LinkedIn in NovemberThis past November, members of the Videoconferencing Professionals LinkedIn group used each other as sounding boards to help find the answers to a number of questions concerning industry strategies and technical issues. Peggy Daly, corporate account manager at MSpace, asked for a user perspective comparison of Polycom HDX and Cisco C Series technology. Rodolfo Dávila López of ICE stressed that it was important to identify the specific type of user before answering this particular question, as it was a fairly broad topic. That being said, Cisco TelePresence technology edged ahead on the strengths of its ease of use and quality of features, an opinion that was held by members such as Paul Lofgren, president of Golden Gate Networks, LLC, Mark Okern, senior network engineer – video at Enventis (@mrokern), and Florent Gasselin, video conference technician at Audio Visio Media.

October’s activity in the Videoconferencing Professionals LinkedIn group showed just how much attention mobile telepresence and video conferencing is attracting across the industry. Larry Blakely, founder of Leaders in IT (@larryblakely), asked the group its opinion on how the consumerization of video conferencing will affect efforts to move the technology out of the business-to-business world and give it a wider rate of adoption. Blakely compared the current state of the industry to the early stages of the desktop publishing boom, where “good enough” became a substitute for professional-grade quality. Cari Zoch, Social Media Manager at LifeSize Communications (@carizoch), provided the most thoughtful reply, indicating that while companies which only occasionally require video conferencing services would be willing to sacrifice quality and reliability, those that have made it a core feature of their communications portfolio will continue to demand the best uninterrupted video streams available.

Video Conferencing in Education 300x200 Video Conferencing In Academia Post Sparks Interesting Feedback and DiscussionLast week’s blog post discussing the advantages of video conferencing in academia triggered a wave of response from this blog’s readership, particularly from members of the Video Conferencing Professionals LinkedIn group. Although the original post focused on areas where video conferencing has penetrated outside of the classroom setting, many of the comments tackled the distance learning concept and the effectiveness of using telepresence as a tool for engaging remote students.Lance Sturdevant, senior consultant at Thorburn Associates Inc., mentioned his belief that one of the key challenges associated with developing an effective distance learning telepresence system has been ensuring that interactions between the course leader and each student was seamless. Sturdevant specifically mentioned the perceived need to maximize meaningful eye contact in order to imitate face to face communication as much as possible. Rob Sheeley, President at Vaddio (@robsheeley), agreed, adding that a key factor in achieving this desired level of interactivity was to pay keen attention to the design of not just the studio from which the educator is broadcasting, but also the classroom where the students are located. He also posited that perhaps a group setting was not always necessary on the student end of the equation, and that individual learning locations for each person accessing the distance learning course could be a positive approach. Charles M. Danelutt, audio/visual design engineer at CMD Engineering Services, LLC, expanded on Sheeley’s original thought, indicating that engineers need to step up and create a video conferencing environment where educators do not have to concern themselves with technical or production details and can therefore focus exclusively on teaching.
